Happy Birthday Bill Pecota!

The legendary Bill Pecota turned 52 today. I'd post his stats, but Baseball-Reference has destroyed my will to live by throwing random minor league garbage into everything now. (Only .01% of the world knows what I'm talking about, but they know exactly what I'm talking about)

Pecota was a Royal from 1986-1991, went to the Mets in 1992, then played two final desultory years with Atlanta in a reverse Dayton Moore John Schuerholz move.

Pecota was a 10th round pick back in 1981 (he was the only player from his round to make the Majors), and while he became famous for being basically random and not that good, he carved out a decent career: 1729 PAs, playing just about every position and hitting .249 with some walks and some sometimes doubles. He peaked in 1991, posting a .286/.356/.399 line, which was good for a 109 OPS+

In what we might call the identity formula of sabermetrics, the PECOTA comparable for Pecota is Pecota.

is there any reason people use ape hangers?
It Looks Cool

And , in conjunction with extended forks, renders the machine semi-dirigible at best.

Of all the things in the world that I can coexist with or tolerate...

the one thing I will never understand is riding a motorcycle…

Why in the world would I want to rip the hood off of my car and ride on the engine going down the highway?

Image Is Everything
don't remember him much

but this guy must be one of the greatest Royals of all time. Heck, he’s even got some kind of “line” named after him. You have to be above this line to be awesome. So, he must’ve been awesome.

Mediocrity, Thy Name

Is Pecota. We experienced his glorious peak in ‘90/’91, but he was Sporqie without the odd consistency and OF “skilz”. We got the best he had to offer, so there’s that. I was blissfully unaware at the time.

SHUT YO MOUTH

Just talkin bout PECOTA.

One, Le Sporque is not worthy to carry Bill Pecota’s suitcase. Never saw Willie B. get near the mound. And lest ye forget, Bill played in the pre-gritty white guy era. To sully THE PECOTA with such a comparison is true insult (’Quist was a Mariner for chrissake!)

Along with Jim ‘shitfuckasstits’ Eisenreich and maybe Storm Davis (and possibly Bruce Chen someday) Bill Pecota is one of the great shitty royals of all time.

Guys like Sal Fasano came close. Maybe Mike Macfarlane, but really, Macfarlane and Boone are kinda like being an Elvis or a Beatles man, you can’t be both.

Mark Quinn would probably be the last to make a run at the shitty royals hall of fame.

I'm Talking About

An oeuvre, not just the Royals experience.

I loved Bill Pecota

Wathan used him as a pinch runner alot in 1989-he had more runs than hits that year, as did Gary Thurman, and neither one was caught stealing in 21 total attempts. Though it was a poor year for him overall, I remember watching a double header at Yankee stadium where he went 5-9 with a walk, a double and his only 3 home runs of the year. What a day for a utility guy!

In 1990 and 1991, he hit .316/.399/.469 against lefties. Sometimes a utility guy wins you over, and I was almost as upset that Bill Pecota was our throw in for the Saberhagen trade as I was that we traded Sabes.

It has to be less than .01 percent
yeah, thats like 700,000 people.

major defensive value?

is he still in top 100? orhave new players pushed him out?

New players have pushed him out

But he will always be #66 in my heart.

I suppose it is something to have a unit of measure named after you

unless your name is Mendoza
