In honor of tonight's KU-Mizzou game, I wanted to poll y'all on your college loyalties. I've always kinda felt that Royals fans skew a little towards KU.

I'm rooting for KU though I'm an Iowa State fan
Mizzou’s fleeing of the Big 12 really irked me. Gives the impression, “we’re all better than you”; not unlike the BFIB.
Plus, Eastern Iowa is infested with F.I.B’s (fucking illinois bastards).
Iowa is a fairweather state with pro sports teams. It’s just the nature of the people here. When the Chiefs are good, they’re the local favorite in Des Moines. When they suck, hardly anyone cares. The Cubs are kind of a trendy-hip thing to Iowans.
Though I was born in Ames—both my parents and their families are from Iowa. It’s been my resulting experience in many times visiting the state that Iowans, especially on the east side, favor Cubs most of all, White Sox second. Twins fans probably are third, but I can honestly say that I haven’t experienced many Cardinal fans who live in Iowa.
In Eastern Iowa, it is ALL Cubs, Cardinals and SOME White Sox. So many people in Eastern Iowa that either go to the U of Iowa or live there are from Illinois.
As far as the most populous part of the state (Central Iowa)…. It is not even close. The Cubs and Cardinals are about even for the favorite team. Maybe a slight edge to the Cubs. The Royals are BY FAR the 3rd favorite team here. The Twins have somewhat of a following in Des Moines, but really not that much. They seem to have more fans in northern Iowa and I think some in Eastern Iowa. As far as Western Iowa, I’m not really sure. I would assume the Royals are pretty big over there because I know they have a strong following in Omaha.
I moved to Austin with the old lady almost exactly eight years ago.
It was a change of scenery. A lot of people I know like parts of Houston a lot, especially the neighborhood around Rice. Downtown is really the only part I have much experience with, and it always seems totally dead.
If you find yourself heading to Austin, you should holler at me.
I’m also in Des Moines and find it very satisfying to catch most of the royals games on cable. Hopefully a larger following picks up because I’m not a huge fan of the Cubs current state of domination.
and I’m a huge Hawkeye fan. I tolerate Iowa State, and went to college near Columbia so I tolerate Mizzou also, but if I have to put up with these fucking facebook M I Z posts anymore I’m gonna go ballistic. I went to Mizzou football games when the stadium was empty and they were giving tickets away in the 90’s. Now it’s the hip thing to do and it frankly pisses me off. FWIW, most of them are staunch cards fans too. Eff’em.
Impressions are worthless when you have straightforward statements and legitimate reasons for the contrary.
Mizzou is leaving because the conference is unstable and there is more money to be had in the SEC. Stop talking about the impression. We get it. You’re mad. Just say that. Not that you have to be jealous, just that you’re mad.
The Confeds admitted pro-secesh delegations from MO and KY
to their Congress, and claimed them as member states, which is why there are 13 rather than 11 stars on the Confederate battle flag. They never succeeded in holding any serious amount of either of them. Missouri was a battleground of guerrilla bands from both sides, though on the whole the Union was in charge of the state. The Confed stronghold wasn’t the Ozarks, whose non-slaveholding inhabitants were pro-Union, but Little Dixie along the Missouri River, which included Jackson and Clay counties.
Only dramatic role, and she did a surprisingly good job. Not great, but not embarrassing. It’s based on the novel Woe To Live On by Arkansan Daniel Woodrell. The distributor and title changed post-production, and it sank quickly in theaters. It is fairly well respected now. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134154/
Impressions are at least as important, perhaps even moreso, than the actual facts. Why do you think politicians are so careful about their image and how they present themselves?
Also, the argument that “the conference is unstable”, when applied to Mizzou’s defection, is laughable. At the time Missouri was contemplating leaving, the rest of the conference members were completely unified and looking to expand in order to create stability. Missouri was the only school at that time that was doing anything unstable, but somehow they thought that “unstability” was a fine argument.
I kinda wish they’d have been let into the Big10 so Iowa could feast on them every fall in football. They’re basically just going to be Vanderbilt in the SEC.
And every school was looking out for their best interest in doing so. The big 12 was great for schools like kstate and Oklahoma state who have no other options. And it was in Texas and Oklahomas interest because they make a lt of money through unequal revenue sharing or Colorado, who has a great media market base but bad teams. So yes, mizzou was looking out for its best interests initially. But there is strong reason to believe other schools, including Texas were too, and they certainly were looking out for their own interests by perpetuating a vastly unequal revenue distribution system. Once Colorado and Nebraska were gone, the Big 12 was in serious trouble because they lacked the assets to be competitive from a revenue standpoint. Even Oklahoma and Oklahoma state realized this and tried to leave two weeks before Mizzou did (but they were rejected by the PAC-12 because of poor academics). Any team who can leave and land in a major conference (Big East obvioisly does not count) was and is trying to do so with the exceptions of Texas and Oklahoma (who is tied to OK st).
In short, the instability was created by a lack of conference vision leading to low revenue generation and unequal revenue sharing. It became vastly more profitable for several schools to deaffiliate and find new conference. Some have been able to, some haven’t. The ones who havent hate the fact that they aren’t as attractive to major conferences as the ones who have.
so rooting for KU. I agree that Royals fans seem to skew towards KU but it’s weird then even though the stadium is extremely close to the state of Kansas, Ryan and Frank always seemed to act like it was in the middle of Missouri. idk. I thought the stadium was in Missouri so Johnson County people could go but not pay the taxes on it, so I always think of the Royals as more of a Kansas team than a Missouri team (states, not colleges)
At the very least I just wish the announcing crew would give more love to the state of Kansas. Maybe it’s just who their sponsors are and they have to talk about Missouri more because of it.
I don’t understand why, when I was at KU, so many KU students couldn’t figure out that it’s not smart to wear a red KU shirt to a KU-Nebraska football game.
i didn't know KU students actually went to football games
i visited a buddy at KU one weekend for the KU/OSU football game and we spent the all day saturday at Louises Downtown getting hammered. i think i remember there was a TV there with the game on, but i dont really remember too much.
and other than that magical 2007 season (during which I had to work on Saturdays, and will assume things were differently), students would generally show up hammered and leave around halftime.
Did they move the Kansas/Missouri line at some point in history?
It seems dumb to name a city after one state when it’s either in or extremely close to another. At least Missouri isn’t another country. “Welcome to Arizona City, Mexico!”
And, the city existed long before the state. So, no one named Kansas City after any other state. There was no such state back when the city was founded.
Then they went and screwed it all up when they admitted Kansas to the Union.
They should have just called it "South Nebraska" or something.
from the paid “Promote Missouri Tourism” spots they do. Which, as a KU guy, I have no problem with. There’s nothing wrong with trying to pump up the economy of the state the team plays in a little.
i don’t enjoy amateur sports very much. i was born and raised in kansas, went to umkc and currently live in missouri, so if i was forced to pick one at gunpoint i’d say ku, but the result of this game is all the same to me.
I probably don’t like college football because KU almost always is terrible but it just seems like even the top match ups look like really low quality NFL teams playing. Then there’s how seedy it is
Is so bad, it makes it impossible for me to partake in the sport as a whole. I root for Iowa State, watch their games when I can, and I might watch another important game for entertainment every once in a while. But the sport of college football is such a joke, I can’t take the league seriously.
The early exit of talent to the NBA has greatly diminished my enjoyment of college basketball. Don’t misunderstand me. They have every right to go and earn as much as they can, it just bums me out that I can only root for the best players for one or two years.
watching the mid-major programs. I go to a ton of Missouri State games and I really enjoy them quite a bit. I think it’s just the fact that even getting into the big dance is a huge deal to those teams. It makes it more fun, and there are actually some really good teams at that level these days. Creighton and Wichita are both really good this year.
You need the Royals to keep you humble. Yeah, because you pick the best team from each school you went to and support them. Of course, Pitt State, before this year, was mediocre for the last several years. And of course, KU football. Just surrounded by winning, you are.
Relatives and friends who attended KSU, and none who attended KU. I like KSU, and I followed their football teams in the Dickey/Grogan years, but KU had some good football teams when I was a kid and the basketball team is historic. I’m always for KSU until they play KU.
I’m sue it’s in the best interests of student athletes as you say to make non-profit sport students fly out to Florida and Georgia on a regular basis. I find it irritating that people even pretend to make that argument, really.
Although, actually I would have chosen “none of the above,” which isn’t quite the same as “other.” I just don’t have any NCAA loyalties.
I went to UMKC and thought that it was a bad idea to make the jump to D-I. I actively opposed the move, actually. The old UMKC/Rockhurst rivalry actually seemed more exciting that getting beat by the other unknowns in The Summit League (f/k/a Mid-Continent Conference). So, anyway, after complaining about that program for most of my educational career, I can’t really claim any loyalty to the team.
Also, they kind of suck. So, I’m left with nuthin’.
The move to the NCAA happened in my first year on campus...
…so I can’t speak from personal experience of the NAIA teams. (When I say I “opposed” the move, I suppose I mean mostly in a post hoc whiner sort of way). But they used to win… they had a postseason more often than not. And I do actually remember that older students (and also faculty) back in the late 80’s actually reminisced about the old teams, and packed-house games against Rockhurst. They made it sound like the teams were competitive.
Northwest Missouri State, baby. I have MU friends, KU friends, Oklahoma friends, etc. having gone to a D-II school, it allows me to stay above (or below) the fray. Plus, major college sports have become a major, hypocritical, nonsensical joke, so I guess I really don’t care about not having a clear D-I college affiliation.
I went to Northwest and I don't understand how anybody could be a Bearcat fan exclusively.
I kind of follow them during football season, but I went to 2 games while I was there from 2005-2009. And they went to the national championship every one of those years. It’s not just exciting when it’s D-II.
Another KU student, so I am cheering for the Jayhawks tonight
I am really looking forward to the game tonight, but also very nervous. I don’t know how MU plans on stopping Robinson, but if bad Tyshawn shows up, KU could seriously shoot for 30 turnovers. And as much as I like to poke fun at The Paige, the place looked jacked up for College Gameday and will be a seriously hostile environment .
I’m most likely the only commenter here with literally no connections to KC or anything Royals related. I’ll get to see my first Royals game in August though when they play in TB. But anyways, my father attended Miami undergrad and Purdue grad and my mother attended Purdue all the way through. Tonight is IU Purdue. Boiler Up
i suppose i’ll be rooting for KU tonight since i have many friends that went to KU and i spent several drunken/party weekends in Lawrence as an undergrad.
grad school was one of the greatest times of my life. lots of fun, intellectual stimulation, got to travel and live in Europe for awhile as part of my degree (had lots of ‘fun’ with Euro women), and got paid to play with lasers everyday. what more could a guy who didn’t really want to get a job after graduation want.
i recommend grad school. you’ve got the rest of your life to work. you might as well spend a few years now studying something you are interested in and enjoying life.
if you’re looking for grad studies in the medical science world, let me know, i can send you info on the grad program i run at OK State.
Mostly I'm none, but my school that I randomly take pride in once every 4 years or so is George Washington University
although just from being to a KU grad I probably inadvertently follow KU basketball more than any thing else college sports related.
I did get a Colonials baseball t-shirt for Christmas though, which I am quite pleased about, even though in college I thought the baseball players were pretty douchey on the rare occasions I was around them.
You can volunteer to build homes in Joplin alongside the Royals, along with the Cardinals, Chiefs, Rams, Mizzou Tigers, Blues and NASCAR. They’re going to build 35 homes in seven different neighborhoods, I believe, spread out across Joplin.
Check it out, volunteer, donate, etc. Now back to tonight’s regularly scheduled hate.
A little for Virginia since my sister went there and I visited a lot. For this rivalry, I side with Kansas. My parents took me to weekend art/etc classes in Lawrence when I was little, so I went with that side. I remember loving a hot dog place there, I think it was called “Pups”. I could be wrong on the name, but I remember a place like it existed.
would be KU vs. MU fans in Missouri. I bet you’d get a significant KU percentage in Jackson, Clay, and Ray counties, as many Kansas Citians go to KU, and the rest would be Mizzou.
Royals fans: 100% of Kansas, 100% of Nebraska, 30% of Missouri, 10% of Oklahoma, OK State, Iowa, and IA State.
I'm rooting for KU though I'm an Iowa State fan
Mizzou’s fleeing of the Big 12 really irked me. Gives the impression, “we’re all better than you”; not unlike the BFIB.

yeah, not the most thrilling experience of my life.

I come from a family of 10 and we’re all Royals fans.
I have turned others into Royals fans simply by taking them with me to games or convincing them a weekend in KC with a Royals game is a great getaway.
There’s more of us here than you think. And my Dad told me there was a huge following back in the 80’s.

But I’m not a Royals fan haha. I am looking forward to this game tonight!

All I can say is.. goodbye, Missouri.
I’m sue it’s in the best interests of student athletes as you say to make non-profit sport students fly out to Florida and Georgia on a regular basis. I find it irritating that people even pretend to make that argument, really.
KeepItCopacetic - February 4, 2012
Columbia is closer to Athens, GA
Then to College Station, Lubbock, or Austin, TX. Mizzou had plenty of long distance travel to do even if they stayed in the Big 12.
BeauJackson - February 4, 2012
You left "not sure" off of your poll again...
So, I’m left with nuthin’.
kcemigre - February 4, 2012
Was UMKC a good NAIA program?
I remember when they made the move and getting kinda excited about it. RONNIE SCHMITZ THREE POINTERS4EVR!
RoyalsRetro - February 4, 2012
The move to the NCAA happened in my first year on campus...
…so I can’t speak from personal experience of the NAIA teams. (When I say I “opposed” the move, I suppose I mean mostly in a post hoc whiner sort of way). But they used to win… they had a postseason more often than not. And I do actually remember that older students (and also faculty) back in the late 80’s actually reminisced about the old teams, and packed-house games against Rockhurst. They made it sound like the teams were competitive.
kcemigre - February 4, 2012
WILLIAM JEWELL NAIA WHOOO
Except we are moving to NCAA Division II. Whoops.
Yodazilla - February 4, 2012
Hey, they beat UMKC recently

Did they?
My favorite part of basketball games is playing in the pep band. That would have been so much fun.

Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat
Northwest Missouri State, baby. I have MU friends, KU friends, Oklahoma friends, etc. having gone to a D-II school, it allows me to stay above (or below) the fray. Plus, major college sports have become a major, hypocritical, nonsensical joke, so I guess I really don’t care about not having a clear D-I college affiliation.
Sweep_the_Leg - February 4, 2012
Oh no doubt about it.
But enough went into my degree that I feel justified in sticking around.
KeepItCopacetic - February 4, 2012
I went to Northwest and I don't understand how anybody could be a Bearcat fan exclusively.
I kind of follow them during football season, but I went to 2 games while I was there from 2005-2009. And they went to the national championship every one of those years. It’s not just exciting when it’s D-II.
hawkinscm87 - February 5, 2012
Another KU student, so I am cheering for the Jayhawks tonight
I am really looking forward to the game tonight, but also very nervous. I don’t know how MU plans on stopping Robinson, but if bad Tyshawn shows up, KU could seriously shoot for 30 turnovers. And as much as I like to poke fun at The Paige, the place looked jacked up for College Gameday and will be a seriously hostile environment .

Miami and Purdue
I’m most likely the only commenter here with literally no connections to KC or anything Royals related. I’ll get to see my first Royals game in August though when they play in TB. But anyways, my father attended Miami undergrad and Purdue grad and my mother attended Purdue all the way through. Tonight is IU Purdue. Boiler Up

Im a professor at Oklahoma State.....Go Pokes!!!!
i also graduated from Ok State.
i suppose i’ll be rooting for KU tonight since i have many friends that went to KU and i spent several drunken/party weekends in Lawrence as an undergrad.

Didn't Coach Self go to Oklahoma State?
AvilesRotY - February 4, 2012
Indeed, But The
School has been usurped by T. Boone Pickens since then. He calls the shots now.
philofthenorth - February 4, 2012
Uncle T. Boone built the building where my research lab is located.
thanks Uncle Pickens!!!
DickHowser4ever - February 4, 2012
What research do you do?
I’m a science major and going to be graduating in May. What’s getting a grad degree like?
AvilesRotY - February 4, 2012
i do cancer research in the world of Radiotherapy
grad school was one of the greatest times of my life. lots of fun, intellectual stimulation, got to travel and live in Europe for awhile as part of my degree (had lots of ‘fun’ with Euro women), and got paid to play with lasers everyday. what more could a guy who didn’t really want to get a job after graduation want.
i recommend grad school. you’ve got the rest of your life to work. you might as well spend a few years now studying something you are interested in and enjoying life.
if you’re looking for grad studies in the medical science world, let me know, i can send you info on the grad program i run at OK State.
DickHowser4ever - February 5, 2012
Mostly I'm none, but my school that I randomly take pride in once every 4 years or so is George Washington University
although just from being to a KU grad I probably inadvertently follow KU basketball more than any thing else college sports related.
I did get a Colonials baseball t-shirt for Christmas though, which I am quite pleased about, even though in college I thought the baseball players were pretty douchey on the rare occasions I was around them.

Ooops! That should say that I'm married to a KU grad.

OT (sort of)
At tonight’s game, they’re going to announce the Governor’s Joplin Challenge with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in Joplin for tornado victims.
http://joplinchallenge.mo.gov/
You can volunteer to build homes in Joplin alongside the Royals, along with the Cardinals, Chiefs, Rams, Mizzou Tigers, Blues and NASCAR. They’re going to build 35 homes in seven different neighborhoods, I believe, spread out across Joplin.
Check it out, volunteer, donate, etc. Now back to tonight’s regularly scheduled hate.

I root for Temple and West Virginia for myself.

Crooow - February 5, 2012
An interesting dividing line
would be KU vs.
Juancho - February 7, 2012
SE Kansas has a fair amount of Rangers and Cardinals fans from what I've seen.
Warden11 - February 8, 2012
I didn't explain that well at all
What I meant was this:
If you look at this particular college campus, what percentage of the baseball fans among the students are Royals fans?
KU, K-State, Nebraska: 90%
MU: 30%
Iowa, ISU, Oklahoma, OSU: 10%
If you look at the state of Missouri, which counties have a significant percentage of KU fans?
Probably only Jackson, Clay, and Ray. Maybe a few from St. Louis County who went to school there.
Juancho - February 8, 2012
I don't follow college sports at all.
Coincidentally I don’t attend junior high band concerts or high school debates either.
