Maier Vs Dyson: The Battle of Wits Has Begun

With the recent announcement of Yost's semi-tentative "don't hold me to this" remark of having a four-man bench, the talk has turned to who the possibilities are for those four seats. One of them is completely and utterly locked in, in the malevolent form of Yuniesky Betancourt. One of those tickets for an all-expenses-paid summer of pine-riding is almost assuredly bought and paid for for Mr. Brayan Pena. The other two spots would seem to come down to three or four different players: Kevin Kouzmanoff, Chris Getz, Jarrod Dyson, and the incumbent Mitch Maier.

Although I wouldn't prefer it, I don't think Ned Yost can resist not having one of either KevKou or Getz sitting a mere thirty or forty feet away from him at all times, ready to do...whatever it is they do...on the baseball diamond.

Which invariably leaves us with the 25th spot, and the right to send letters home from Summer Camp, between one Mitchell William Maier and one Jarrod Martel Dyson.

Poll
If you had to pick between them for the 2012 4th OFer, whom would you rather have?

OT: Royals Review AL Only Ross Gload Memorial League and Open Thread

There are a couple spots available for the RR AL Only Ross Gload Memorial Roto League. The draft will be Thursday, March 15, at 7:30 pm central time. It is a standard 5x5 roto format (OBP, HR, RBI, R, RBI for hitting, W, K, WHIP, ERA, SV for pitching). You also get to keep the stats of players traded to the NL during the season.

If you are interested, please post below and include an email at which I can reach you. I will then be in touch in the next day or so. Priority will go to RR regulars (which should serve as an incentive to post more). The only prerequisite is that you are available for the draft date (which will not be changed), so please express interest only if you are available on March 15 at 7:30 pm.

Ned Yost on Democracy in Afghanistan (and other topics)

Ned Yost on the European Financial Crisis:

"You know, they’ve hit a few bumps in the road, but Europe is looking stronger than ever and I expect them to compete with the best of ‘em this year."

Yost on the National Deficit:

"It’s been lower, no question. But if you really watch it, you can see how it’s gonna settle down—I don’t expect it to be an issue in 2012."

Yost on Whitney Houston:

"Now there’s a set of golden pipes, let me tell you. She’s gone through a rough stretch, there’s no hiding that, but I think she’s gonna rebound this year and come back like the old Whitney."

Yost on Democracy in Afghanistan:

"The trick there is to get the locals to buy in—and you can see that happening already. I think you’ll see some solid balance between the executive and judicial branches this year, and don’t underestimate the legislature."

Yost on Syria:

"Look, every country goes through a slump now and again. Heck I’ve seen it happen to Chipper Jones."

Yost on Limburger cheese:

"Does it stink? Sure it does, but you know something, you put it out there for the guests, you stick with it, and next thing you know it’s helping you out because someone took their shoes off when they came in the door and maybe woulda stunk the place up but no one notices."

Royals Records

With all the pieces seemingly coming together for the Royals, it got me thinking of the Royals HR record. Steve Balboni currently holds the record at 36, which is rather low for a franchise. With Moose, Hosmer, Butler and Gordon as the Royals potential power hitters I was thinking Balboni's record may be broken in the next 5 or so years. Butlers career high is 21, Gordon hit a career high 23 last year, Moose hit 5 last year as a rookie and Hosmer hit 19 as a rookie last year.

2012 Royals Starters as Played By...

Moneyball was a successful movie by commercial standards, and even portrayed our Kansas City Royals! Unfortunately, the big name actors did not play the Royals. However—2012 is the year. This is OUR TIME. If the Royals do something insane and go on to win a World Series in dramatic fashion, we may just get our own movie. Wouldn’t that be something?

But who would play each of our beloved players? I have done some searching, and come up with these names. What do you think?

Eric Hosmer: Cory Monteith

Monteith, as many of you know, is the main man of Glee. Why should he play Hosmer then? Well, he looks like him, for one. Secondly, I think he would be able to handle a leading part in the midst of an ensemble crowd.

Interview with Royals Review Creator, Writer, & Manager Will McDonald

Second in the blogger-on-blogger blogging series is the definitive Will McDonald interview. Prowling as the mystical Freneau, Will McDonald is the shepherd of Royals Review. I decided to search in the deepest recesses, digging to the center of baseball's soul, to unearth what makes the Will McDonald clock tick. The following interview was conducted over a series of emails. Detailed is a menacing story, including Pop Tarts, Sabermetrics, and even... Katy Perry. Enjoy!

Will, what year was Royals Review created and what was going on in your life at the time?

The site launched in May 2005, if you can believe it. At the time, I was finishing up my first year of graduate school at Iowa, beginning what I thought would be a glorious life studying American literature.

Friday OT thread: 2/17/12

I cobbled together these questions with no particular theme. Enjoy.

What is the worst airport experience you've ever had that you care to share here?

What athlete, who had his career cut short for one reason or another (injury, death, etc.), would you most have liked to see complete it at full ability?

You have been granted the ability to go back in time with any one modern technology or invention, pass it off as if you had invented it, make as much money off it as you can in five years, and come back with all your money, which will then be adjusted for inflation. What do you do?

What's your favorite guitar riff ever?

Dayton Moore trivia time

I though it would be a nice break from gazing hopefully towards the upcoming season and look back, perhaps fondly, upon the disasters that were Royals seasons of old.

So I decided to do a little digging and come up with a fun question for you, one that a quick Google search shouldn't provide the answer too.
